The 2nd finger from the right is swollen to double the size…..ouch!
A good 26 miler last night up the Pentlands with Roger back from holiday more than half a stone heavier and badly out of form struggling on the climbs and even on the descents! I managed to do, what now appears my nearly compulsory, over the bars at zero speed. The landing wasn’t a perfect three pointer and though I didn’t feel it at the time the finger swelled up later on at evening and throbbed constantly throughout the night.
As I’m far more or less forbidden to complain about biking injuries I had to suffer in silence but thank god it’s a bit much better today!&nbsp

The massive red paddlewheel is turning. Crowds rush to the riverbanks of tiny towns to whoop and wave. In the pilot property, Capt. John Sutton lowers the twin stacks so American Queen can pass below railroad bridges. Heavily laden coal barges, like lengthy chains of dominoes, chug past.

The double doors of their cabins splayed wide open to the spring breezes, passengers line American Queen’s rails to soak in the ever-changing scenery that varies from a legendary bandits’ cave to locks and dams. As Sutton blows the steam whistle, a ship buff says: ‘Savor that sound. That is not a sound you will hear in the United States any a lot more.’

about us pic The Heroes Project: 7 Summits, 7 Warriors

I obtained a note last week about an wonderful organization that is assisting wounded soldiers to re-connet with their lives by climbing some of the largest mountains on the planet. The non-profit is referred to as The Heroes Venture&nbspand it functions with disabled vets to assist them in overcoming their injuries and giving them renewed hope by means of the challenge of taking on the Seven Summits.

The organization was founded by Tim Medvetz, who many of you will almost certainly remember from the tv present Everest: Past The Restrict. By means of that show we realized that Tim had suffered a brutal motorbike accident but that he was determined to still do extraordinary factors regardless of the injury that had occurred to his body. In summitting Everest, Tim was able to present what was achievable for people who were recovering from daily life altering accidents.

After returning from Everest Tim made a decision he wasn’t done climbing and he needed to support other people who have been in a equivalent place that he was as soon as in. So, he founded The Heroes Venture and set about visiting the Seven Summits, taking wounded vets along with him for the climb.&nbspCurrently the group is performing fundraising for a Kilimanjaro climb that is scheduled to consider place next month. There, on the highest peak in Africa, they hope to as soon as again have an overwhelmingly optimistic influence on the life of a soldier that has suffered wounds in combat.

The video beneath gives a bit much more data about the organization and is a wonderful introduction to what they do.

Australian adventurer Tim Jarvis&nbsphas announced a main expedition that will adhere to in the footsteps of one particular of the best polar explorers in history – Ernest Shackleton. In January of up coming year, Jarvis will depart for the Antarctic in which he will try to recreate what is considered by many to be the best survival story of all time. The journey will be a demanding, demanding a single that hasn’t been successfully replicated in virtually a hundred many years.

For those unaware of Shackleton’s story, even though he was exploring the Antarctic in January of 1915 his ship, the Endurance, grew to become trapped in the pack ice. He and his crew utilized it as their shelter and retailer property for months as they waited for climate circumstances to boost ample to free it from the ice, but before that could happen the ship’s hull was breached and it began to take on water. In October, Shackleton and his guys abandoned the Endurance for great, electing to construct camps on the ice floes. They hoped that they ice would drift in direction of one of the nearby islands, permitting them to attain land and entry provide caches, but after yet another 5 months they had been no closer to dry ground and the ice floes commenced to break up. In a desperate move, the crew took to 3 daily life boats and headed for open water and immediately after 5 days out on the freezing Southern Ocean that reached the desolate and remote Elephant Island. It was the initial time they have been on land in nearly 500 days.

Elephant Island was hardly a long lasting refuge nevertheless and Shackleton knew he had to go for help. On April 24, 1916, he and a modest group of men set out across treacherous waters for South Georgia Island, some 800 miles away. They went in a little boat dubbed the James Caird following one of the a lot more generous sponsors of the expedition and all onboard knew that this was a one particular way trip. But somehow they managed to cross those 800 miles and land on South Georgia, although they had been nevertheless miles from rescue. Shackleton and two of his guys then crossed the island, covering 32 miles in 36 hrs, along an unknown route, to attain a whaling station wherever they identified aid at final. A ship was ultimately dispatched to retrieve the guys even now stranded on Elephant Island, which took some time due the ice, but they have been all rescued and in the finish, not a single existence was lost, which tends to make the story all the a lot more remarkable.

The next productive crossing of South Georgia by foot wouldn’t come till 1955, which gives you an idea of how difficult this undertaking was, and no a single has ever managed to total both the boat journey and the crossing. Subsequent year, Tim Jarvis will attempt to do just that.

In preparation for the expedition Jarvis has had a replica of the James Caird built and he and his crew will use vintage 1916 gear along the way. They will attempt to initial complete the 800 mile crossing from Elephant Island to South Georgia by sea and then traverse the island along the exact same route that Shackleton did. It will be a incredible undertaking and the whole journey will be filmed for an upcoming documentary to celebrate the a hundred anniversary of Shackleton’s adventure.

You can study far more about what promises to be an remarkable expedition on the official web site.

Shackleton’s story has constantly been a fascinating one particular. He and his men suffered for months in some of the harshest conditions on the planet. But they managed to survive. Every single a single of them. It was a bold and hardy group to say the least, and none more so than their leader. Jarvis’ expedition has a great deal to reside up to and it will be fascinating to see how he and his group fare.

Thanks to Lisa for sharing this inspiring story. Cannot wait to see how it all plays out.
